Members of the Senior Citizens group Community Without Walls will perform their original play, About Family, on Thursday, June 2nd at 1:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Metuchen Public Library, 480 Middlesex Avenue (Rte 27) in Metuchen.

Community Without Walls, Inc. (CWW) is an association of individuals and couples ages 55 and older who desire a way of remaining in their communities as they age. Their mission is to enhance and support the ability of members to age well in place. The group is based in Mercer County. Several years ago, a few members came together to form CWW On Stage as a way of using performance art to engage with the larger communities in which they live.

Under the direction of Adam Immerwahr, a professional director and Associate Producer at McCarter Theatre in Princeton, CWW on Stage provides training in acting and dramatic skills for senior performers. Using dramatic techniques such as storytelling, improvisation and dialogue, the program focuses on new approaches to articulating challenging issues which affect people of all ages.
After their performance training, the members pick a subject to explore and go out in their communities and conduct taped interviews. The interviews are transcribed and shaped into a performance piece consisting of scenes and monologue that the seniors perform.

The first piece developed by the program was called Not just Surviving…But Thriving. It was a performance response to the question, “What is healthy aging?”

The piece that is to be performed in Metuchen on June 2nd is called About Family. It also is based on collected personal stories that discuss the circumstances under which people come together to form families of one kind or another.

About Family will be performed on June 2nd at 1:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Metuchen Public Library located at 480 Middlesex Avenue (Rte 27) in Metuchen. The performance is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the performance.

This is a presentation of the Metuchen Arts Council, and signals the beginning of Metuchen’s month-long Junebug ArtFest during which every Friday night in June, Main Street Metuchen will be host to outdoor art exhibits, music and dance performances, great food and activities for the whole family.
