In a heartwarming celebration that brought together families from all corners of Metuchen, the newly restored Harold C. Junker Kiwanis Park, affectionately known as Center Street Park, officially opened its doors this week. A group of enthusiastic children from the Radio District had the honor of cutting the ribbon, marking the beginning of a new chapter for this cherished community space.

As the crowd gathered, the excitement was palpable. “Today’s unveiling showcased a modern, vibrant playground that promises to rekindle the joy this park has provided to generations of families. It’s wonderful to be here with so many Metuchen families,” said Mayor Jonathan M. Busch during the ceremony. “This park has held a special place in the heart of our Radio District community for many years, and today we’re excited to bring back the vibrancy and joy it has always offered.”

One of the park’s most beloved features, the old slide on the hill, holds a special nostalgic value for many residents. Although it was retired for safety reasons, the new playground pays homage to this icon with an updated version that retains the spirit of fun. Families can also look forward to a brand-new accessible swing set, a climbing structure, and a soft rubber surface designed to ensure safe play for children of all ages. It’s a thoughtfully designed space where neighborhood kids can explore, play, and create lasting memories.

These enhancements are part of a broader initiative by the Borough to invest in Metuchen’s recreational spaces, ensuring that they are safe, welcoming, and inclusive for everyone. A heartfelt acknowledgment was given to Middlesex Water for its support in making this project a reality, as well as to Borough Administrator Melissa Perilstein for her tireless dedication and effort in bringing the vision to life.

As laughter and excitement filled the air, the hope is that this revitalized playground will serve as a backdrop for years of friendship and play, just as it has for countless children before. Today, Metuchen takes a step forward in nurturing its community spirit, and the new Harold C. Junker Kiwanis Park stands as a testament to that commitment.
