The Metuchen Public Library is excited to host a special event on Friday, November 22, at 3:30 PM. The event features a unique opportunity to meet New Jersey’s State Archaeologist, Dr. Gregory Lattanzi, who will be presenting a fascinating talk on the indigenous pottery of New Jersey.
Dr. Lattanzi’s talk will cover the origins of New Jersey pottery from the Early Woodland period (circa 100 BCE) and its evolution over 3,000 years. Attendees will learn about the shared cultural identity of pre-contact peoples in the region and how this can be seen in the ceramic iconography of shared vessels across the Mid-Atlantic area. This informative session promises to provide valuable insights into the rich heritage and craftsmanship of New Jersey’s indigenous communities.
The talk is held in conjunction with the “Echoes of the Earth: Pottery and Legacy of the Lenni Lenape” exhibit, spearheaded by Linda Vonderschmidt-LaStella of EarthSongs Ceramic Studio. This special exhibit, on loan from the New Jersey State Museum and curated by Dr. Lattanzi, showcases the legacy of the Lenni Lenape, the indigenous people who originally inhabited New Jersey and other Northeastern states.

Dr. Gregory D. Lattanzi serves as the Curator for the Bureau of Archaeology & Ethnography at the New Jersey State Museum and holds the position of New Jersey State Archaeologist. He has an impressive academic background, having attended the State University of New York at Binghamton and received a Master’s degree from Hunter College in 1995. In 2013, Dr. Lattanzi earned his Ph.D. from Temple University, Philadelphia, while continuing his work at the NJ State Museum. His research focuses on Middle Atlantic archaeology, social complexity, pottery analysis, and pre-contact copper use. Dr. Lattanzi has published numerous articles and delivered presentations at national, state, and local venues.
Don’t miss this exceptional event at the Metuchen Public Library. It’s a rare chance to gain a deeper understanding of the indigenous history of New Jersey and to see authentic artifacts up close.
