2010 was a wonderful season for the Little League in Metuchen. We at MetuchenLiving had a blast this past summer going to games and cheering on the kids for that last bat, that last hit, that last steal and that win! We even went to the Metuchen League Picnic which turned one of our parks into a virtual theme park for a day! Well we’re not going to let 2010 close without reminiscing the Little Leagues scenes we captured and share it with you here. So enjoy and see you all next season!

And here are some highlight stories:

Metuchen 11 Year Olds Win District 10 Championship

The Metuchen 11 year-olds capped off an action packed tournament season, by winning the 2010 Williamsport, NJ District 10, 10-11 year old tournament. In a thrilling back and forth game that you had to see to believe, the 11’s prevailed 17-15 over Franklin Township LL to capture the district 10 title. The game fittingly ended with a sliding catch by Mark Mastromonaco with Franklin runners on second and third. The final was also highlighted by Mitchel Epstein’s 3-run and grand-slam homeruns and other big hits by several members of the team. This is believed to be only the second District 10 Championship for any Metuchen teams from ages 9 thru 12 over an estimated 20 year period.

The final victory was preceded by a 3-0 (vs. Clark, Woodbridge, and Milltown) record in Pool play, a quarter-final home victory over Milltown and a semi-final victory over Franklin. Metuchen’s pitching duties were handled by Alex Brooks, Mike Farr, Joe Hronich, Mastromonaco, and Nick Loffredo with additional timely hitting and defense provided by Luke Spallone, Kyle Harry, David Weiss, Christian Nunez, and Matt Coscia. Congratulations to all 11 members of the team who contributed to this memorable Championship victory!

Metuchen 7 and 8 Year-olds enjoy inaugural Summer League Season

Metuchen 7 and 8 year-olds extended their regular season with the first summer league program for players in this age group. Through the leadership of Joe Cherry and coaches Doug Wheeler, Al Musmanno, and Ray Fortuna, 7 and 8 year-olds participated in weekly skills clinics on Monday nights with intra-league games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the 4 teams in the league. These kids had a great time while further developing their skills and game experiences. This program is a preview of coming attractions for other age groups for 2011 and beyond. Great job Joe and all of the other volunteers who created this special opportunity for our kids.

8-year olds win Milltown Invitational Tournament!

After finishing second in Fords and playing their way into the semi-finals in Colonia, the Metuchen 8’s capped off their first tournament season with a championship in Milltown, highlighted by a No-Hitter in the final game by Adam Boucher. WOW!
