A week after winning the New York State Field Band Championship, the West Genesee High School marching band won a national championship in New Jersey on Saturday night, November 2. The Wildcats took first place in the Class 6 Open division of the USBands National Championships held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., beating second-place South Brunswick (N.J.) by 0.162 of a point.

The Absegami High School Marching Braves of Galloway Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey won the USBands National Championship in the Group 4AA division. The Braves won Best Visual, Best Color Guard, Best Percussion and Best Overall Effect for a score of 95.163 points, best among 19 bands marching in 4A and 4AA. They are the first Absegami band to sweep both the state and national championships in the same season.

And we there, MetuchenLiving – together with the other Metuchen parents to be proud of our kids. We weren’t there to watch them win. We were there to watch them compete, give their best and have fun! The smiles in their faces as they walked onto the field. The joy in their smiles as they left after their performance. The hugs before the photo shoot. The arms around each other’s shoulders. The high fives. Those were enough for us to celebrate and claim this night as a win for our high school band. Thank you kids for a fantastic night and a wonderful season!

The USBands was formed in the Fall of 1988 to provide high school band programs with a competitive circuit featuring the best adjudicators from across the continent and a world class venue for the US Scholastic Band Championship.

Today, USBands boasts membership of over 700 participating high school marching bands. Each year, bands are offered 150 festival opportunities as well as invitations to compete at major Regional Championships and the USBands National, State and Regional Championships. Bands in USbands compete in twelve different classes from Class I A to Class VI Open, performing and competing with other bands of like size and talent.
