In a significant recognition of its commitment to the arts, Papillon & Company has been selected as one of only five venues nationwide to host the prestigious Small Expressions 2024 exhibition. This annual juried showcase, organized by the esteemed Handweavers Guild of America, Inc., shines a spotlight on the intricate and often underappreciated world of contemporary small-scale fiber works.

Located in the heart of Metuchen, Papillon & Company is more than just a venue; it is a hub for cultural enrichment and community engagement. The exhibition is part of the broader Exploring Fiber Arts series, which aims to deepen appreciation for fiber arts within the community. The series kicked off in September 2024 with an inspiring presentation featuring the renowned tapestry weaver Silvia Heyden. Celebrated for her improvisational techniques and innovative designs, Heyden’s iconic tapestries are currently on display at Papillon, offering visitors a glimpse into her artistic genius.

In October, the excitement continued with a sold-out hands-on weaving workshop, where participants immersed themselves in the tactile beauty of fiber art. Guided by expert instructors, attendees explored various weaving techniques on an array of looms, gaining a firsthand understanding of the complexity and artistry involved in this ancient craft.

The highlight of the series, Small Expressions 2024, promises to be a remarkable showcase of talent and creativity. Featuring 33 meticulously crafted pieces from 20 U.S. states and beyond, this exhibition celebrates the mastery of small-scale fiber artistry. Each piece tells a unique story, as artists skillfully blend traditional and nontraditional materials to create rich textures, vibrant colors, and intricate structures. As viewers engage with these compact masterpieces, they embark on a sensory journey that immerses them in the vibrant world of fiber art.

Set against the backdrop of Papillon & Company’s inviting atmosphere, the Small Expressions 2024 exhibition offers a unique opportunity for the public to delve into the nuances of fiber art and to honor the creativity of skilled artisans from across the country.

Mark your calendars for the opening reception on November 16, 2024, and be sure to visit the exhibit from November 15 to December 18, 2024. This is an event not to be missed, as it promises to inspire and elevate the appreciation for the artistry of fiber works in our communities and beyond.
