Memorial Day Parade 2011

The sounds of rousing ragtime favorites from ‘Fred Lehotay’s Ragtimers’ reverberated across the Pearl St parking lot where folks gathered to start this year’s celebration of Memorial Day. The men and women in uniform were in formation and the little scout tots just couldn’t keep their excitement.
The early morning downpour came as a blessing in disguise that made the sweltering heat of this late May weather much more bearable.
“Every year! No way I’m missing a Memorial Day parade so I’m here,” said a local Mom as she prompted her little boy to get on his bicycle and get ready. “It’s a wonderful day to remember all the sacrifices our troops have made for us – for our freedom.” she added.
“It turned out to be a gorgeous summer day! We’re ready to go Baby!.” said Linda Vonderschmidt-Lastella. Linda co-chairs the Metuchen Arts Council which are getting ready for their yearly month long art festival in June.
The dignitaries, musicians and children marched from the Pearl parking lot through Route 27 and down Main Street.
“This is a great and fun parade!” said David Gutierrez visiting from far away Philippines. “It’s important to remember the sacrifices the men in uniform have given not just for freedom in the United States but freedom everywhere else in the world. And it’s an inspiration how a small town like yours (Metuchen) gives much importance to celebrating and remembering.” he added.
Afterward there were hotdogs and drinks sponsored by the American Legion Fugle Hummer Post 65 Auxiliary. It was the perfect day to be with family and remember. And a great start for Metuchen’s summer activities!
